State Rep. McKelvey Agrees to Pay $2000

State Representative Angus McKelvey, who represents District 10 that includes West Maui, Māʻalaea, and North Kīhei, pleaded no contest today in district court for failing to file a complete and accurate candidate committee report and allowing an unauthorized person to receive and disperse campaign funds.

Under the terms of a plea agreement reached with the State and accepted by Honolulu District Court Judge Clarence Pacarro, Rep. McKelvey agreed to pay $2,000 to the Crime Victim Compensation Fund and publish an apology in the Maui News, in exchange for the State not objecting to his motion for a deferred acceptance of his plea.

“We appreciate the fact that the Department of the Attorney General shares our concerns over the seriousness of candidates who fail to report contributions and expenditures in their disclosure reports,” said Kristin Izumi-Nitao, Executive Director of the Campaign Spending Commission.  “Prosecuting these cases guarantees the integrity and transparency of the campaign finance process that the public is entitled to,” said Izumi-Nitao.

“As we head into the 2016 election cycle, my office will continue to work with the Campaign Spending Commission to make sure campaign dollars in Hawaiʻi are collected and spent with transparency,” said Attorney General Doug Chin in a statement.
