Flash Flood Watch Posted Through Friday Night

The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Watch for the state, saying “deep tropical moisture” is expected to spread over the state, bringing the potential for flash flooding.

The Flood Watch includes: the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Lānaʻi, Maui, Molokaʻi, Niʻihau and Kahoʻolawe.

The Watch is currently posted through late Friday night, but may need to be extended for Kauaʻi and Oʻahu, as the NWS is forecasting the potential for flash flooding on those islands into the weekend.

Forecasters with the NWS say, a “Surface Low will form near Kauaʻi on Friday, shifting the chance of flooding to the western half of the state Friday night.”

Special to the Big Island of Hawaii, the NWS notes that the threat of heavy rain will be mainly over the windward side of the island in the Kaʻū, Puna and South Hilo districts.  Forecasters say, the “potential for flooding will diminish Friday night” as the area of moisture moves west of the Big Island.
