Ask the Mayor: What is Being Done About the Waiale Road Junkyard?
Mayor Alan Arakawa answers some of the most-asked questions submitted to his office staff.
Dear Mayor Arakawa,
Q: What is being done about the junk yard/chop shop on Waiale Road across the street from Maui Memorial Park? The area is a mess both on both sides of Waiale Road. Mahalo.
A: The property you are referring to is being investigated by several of our county departments. Our Planning Department has sent out Notices of Warning to the owners of the property for operating a junkyard/salvage operation in a residential district. Separately, the Department of Public Works has sent out its own notices that the property is in violation of the community beautification section of the Maui County Code for Unlawful Maintenance of Property. Our Department of Environmental Management has also been working with the Maui Police Department to cite and tow vehicles parked illegally in public places. The owners of this property do not live on Maui and it has been difficult to contact them, but we are addressing your concerns through various means. Mahalo.
