Rep. Woodson: ‘Our Focus Will Now Be On Helping These Employees’
Rep. Justin Woodson (Kahului, Pu‘unēnē, Old Sand Hills, Maui Lani) commented on yesterday’s announcement that A&B is transitioning out of farming sugar and will instead pursue a diversified agricultural model for its 36,000-acre Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company plantation on Maui.
“When I think about the 700-plus employees and their families, I am saddened by the impact this decision will have on all of their lives,” said Rep. Woodson. “Our focus will now be on helping these employees through the transition and securing good paying jobs. In addition, we want to ensure that the acreage that is currently dedicated to sugar remains green and in productive agriculture.”
