The Sustainable Living Institute of Maui will hold a three-Saturday workshop on the art of building with bamboo beginning on Jan. 16 at UH Maui College.

Instructor Rich von Wellsheim of Whispering Winds Bamboo has decades of experience growing and using bamboo.

He will lead participants through the uses of bamboo and how to design structures on Day 1.

Day 2 is in the shop, exploring the tools and methods used for joining and lashing bamboo, while creating parts of a structure.

Day 3 will offer the opportunity to erect the bamboo structure with the skills learned.

  • Jan. 23, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Jan. 30, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
