Ask the Mayor: Can Potholes on Kauhikoa Road Be Filled?

Mayor Alan Arakawa answers some of the most-asked questions submitted to his office staff.

Dear Mayor Arakawa,

Q: The traffic on the lower stretch of Kauhikoa Road has increased greatly due to the detour caused by the closing of the bridge on Ha‘ikū Road for culvert repairs.

Kauhikoa is very narrow, so cars have to pull to the side when meeting. The result is large potholes along the edges, which seem to get deeper daily, especially when it rains, which happens frequently in Ha‘ikū.

There is no merge, so pedestrians and bikers are in the road. This situation is very dangerous, as well as hard on our vehicles.

It appears that the work on the bridge is going to take a while, so it would be much appreciated if the potholes could be filled in, at least as a stop-gap measure. Thank you for your attention.

A: Indeed, our Public Works Highways Division informs me they are aware of the situation and will be filling in the potholes soon, if they haven’t already done so.
