Twenty-one members of the 82^nd Maui Police Department recruit class joined the ranks of the department on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016 after a graduation and pinning ceremony held at the King Kamehameha Golf Club in Waikapū.  The ceremony also included the graduation of four Emergency Service Dispatchers.

Newly sworn-in officer Nolan Wada earned awards for both Outstanding Recruit and Scholastic Achievement.

Fellow graduates Teru Hayashi, Jacob Ingram, Christopher Clark and Joshua Aquinde also were honored with special awards at the event for excellence in various disciplines.

The recruits went through eight months of physical and academic requirements as part of their training and will now be assigned to the Field Training Officer Program in the coming months.

The department’s Outstanding Recruit Award went to Officer Nolan Wada for presenting the most consistent achievement in the areas of training, leadership, judgement, attitude and service to others.

Other awards included the following:

• Scholastic Achievement Award – Officer Nolan Wada: Presented to the most astute recruit for achieving and maintaining the highest academic grade point average. This included study in criminal law, first responder training, CPR, and motor vehicle accident investigations.
• Neil T. Endo Firearms Award – Officer Teru Hayashi: The award was presented to the most accurate marksman, achieving the highest score during firearms training to include the final written exam, physical shot gun, and a rifle course.
• M. Cecil “Rusty” Dickson Award for Physical Fitness – Officer Jacob Ingram: The award went to the most physically fit recruit, demonstrating overall superiority in arrest, defense and tactics as well as physical training.
• Best Notebook Award – Officer Christopher Clark: For content, organization and completeness and neatness.
• Sensei Shinichi Suzuki Award – Officer Joshua Aquinde: For outstanding performance in Arrest and Defense Tactics.
