Gift to Kula Hospital Keeps Patients In Touch With Families

Kula Hospital is the recipient of a gift from former Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation Board President Fran Mitsumura and her husband Don.

Their gift allowed for the purchase of computers and internet service so that patients can Skype with their loved ones who may be far away. The equipment is located in the Activities Room, and the 55-inch video monitor is the next best thing to patients and families being able to visit in person.

“I first came here as a patient when I was eight years old (the first of many visits) and we also lived just down the road,” said Don Mistumura. “I love this place.  It has so many good memories, the staff are all wonderful. They really care about their patients.”

Fran’s mother and Don’s father and uncle were also patients at Kula Hospital, and the Mitsumura’s said this gift was made in honor of the excellent care they received. “Keeping in touch with loved ones is so important to the healing process,” said Fran Mitsumura. “We were pleased to be able to help the patients here at this very special facility.”

“The patients and residents of Kula Hospital appreciate this generous donation and all the hard work of MMMC’s IT staff who helped to wire our 100-year-old building for internet service,” said Kula Hospital Administrator Darren Kasai. “We appreciate friends like the Mitsumuras who recognize the unique role that Kula Hospital plays in our community.”

Kula Hospital is part of the Maui Region Hospitals, which include Maui Memorial Medical Center and Lānaʻi Community Hospital. Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the health and wellness of the community.
