Auditions for MAPA’s Summer Musical Theatre Camp April 10

mapaMaui Academy of Performing Arts invites young performers who will be entering third grade and higher next school year to audition for its Summer 2016 Musical Theatre Camp.

The camp culminates in a full-scale production of the musical Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Jr., which will run July 15 to 24, 2016.

The show will be directed by Sally Sefton, with music direction by Kirsten Otterson and choreography by Vanessa Cerrito. Kathleen Schulz is the lead teaching artist.

Auditions will be held Sunday, April 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the MAPA Main studios, 2027 Main Street in Wailuku.

No experience is necessary. No preparation is necessary. Wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to stay the full two hours.

All students should register online for the audition.

The camp runs June 6 to July 14, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tuition for the camps is $875. A generous needs-based scholarship program is available. Payment plans are also available. More information will be available after auditions.

For students entering grades nine through 12, MAPA is offering the opportunity to participate in a Work Study Program: teens who are accepted will work for MAPA for 30 hours during the summer and pay a camp tuition of $300.

MAPA’s Summer Musical Theatre Camps are firmly rooted in the philosophy that sustained, regular participation in the arts is essential to the development of young people. Students develop skills in acting, singing and dancing through a rigorous and fun curriculum taught by professional teaching artists. The performances give students the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have gained through the classes and rehearsals including:

  • Acting – physical portrayal of character; vocal expression; emotional commitment and expression
  • Dance – body control; strength and flexibility; counting and rhythm; abstract and literal expression; spatial awareness
  • Voice – breath support and projection; natural singing voice; articulation
  • Professionalism – theatre etiquette; stage directions and annotations; memorization; timing
  • Collaboration – respect; trust of self and others; dependability; flexibility
  • Self-control through focus and concentration – onstage and offstage
