6 New Adult Corrections Officers Assigned to Maui

Twenty-seven recruits graduated  today from the Department of Public Safety’s Basic Corrections Recruit Class 16-01 during a ceremony at the Hawaiʻi Okinawa Center in Waipahu.

A total of six graduates are being assigned to the Maui Community Correctional Center in Wailuku.

The recruits completed nine weeks of training that included 360 hours of classroom time and physical training.

During the training, recruits learned standard of conduct, professionalism and ethics, report writing, interpersonal communications, maintaining security, crisis intervention, security threat groups (gangs), firearms, self-defense tactics, and physical exercise.

“These individuals chose a unique and challenging career path,” said Sergeant Dzuong Le, BCRC Sergeant in Charge in a department press release.

“The job of a corrections officer in a prison or jail is one of the toughest jobs anyone can do, but it can also be rewarding too.  As corrections officers we are held to a higher standard. I know these men and women have what it takes to hold up that standard with professionalism, integrity and fairness,” said Sergeant Dzuong Le.

All incoming classes receive recruit field training along with basic corrections training. That means, during the final weeks of training, they go into the facility and begin their job with the guidance of their training sergeants.

The 27 graduates have been assigned to the following correctional centers/facilities:

• Oʻahu Community Correctional Center 7
• Maui Community Correctional Center 6
• Women’s Community Correctional Center 4
• Hālawa Correctional Facility 4
• Hawaiʻi Community Correctional Center 3
• Waiawa Correctional Facility 2
• Kūlani Correctional Facility 1
