82-Year-Old Man Medevaced From Tour Boat off Olowalu, Maui

An 82-year-old man was medevaced from a snorkeling tour boat near Olowalu Point, Maui on Wednesday morning after he reportedly was experiencing difficulty breathing while snorkeling, according to the US Coast Guard.

A crewmember aboard the Pride of Maui vessel reported the incident at 9:48 a.m. on Wednesday, April 13, 2016.

Coast Guard officials say crewmembers aboard the Pride of Maui reportedly stabilized the man and administered oxygen.

A crew aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium from Station Maui responded and transported the man to Māʻalaea Pier where they were met by Emergency Medical Service personnel.  Medics transferred the man for further treatment to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further evaluation.

Coast Guard Station Maui is one of four small boat stations in the Coast Guard 14th District. Located on the south shore of Maui at Māʻalaea Harbor, the unit has a compliment of 20 active duty members, three reservists and two auxiliarists. Their area of responsibility encompasses Maui, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi and Kaho’olawe as well as Molokini Crater. Search and rescue is one of their primary missions. Coast Guard officials say their missions can include anything from a sinking vessel or downed small plane to a heart attack victim or a swimmer taken out to sea by a rip current.
