Discussion at The MACC: Mana: What is Sacred?

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center will present Mana: What is Sacred? in the McCoy Studio Theater on Sunday, June 5, 2016, beginning at 3 p.m.

The word “mana” is used often in our community, but do we really know what it means or refers to? Is it power? Is it spirit? Is it a life force? Is it an energy—or something else altogether? Is sacredness only connected to religion or is it broader than that?

A group of community experts will come together to share a broad conversation about mana, sacredness and kapu. Cultural practitioners will share their interpretation of what is sacred, its ideology, and some of the ways they apply it to what they do in modern Hawai‘i.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Hōkύlani Holt, director of Ka Hikina O Ka Lā, Hawai‘i Papa O Ke Ao, University of Hawai‘i Maui College.

Joining in the conversation will be: Ulalia Woodside, executive director for The Nature Conservancy of Hawaiʻi; Kaleikoa Ka‘eo, Hawaiian Studies associate professor, University of Hawaiʻi Maui College; and Clifford Nae‘ole, Hawaiian cultural advisor, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.
