Inaugural Plantation Festival, Rescheduled for Aug. 20

The inaugural Plantation Festival that was initially scheduled for July 23, 2016, has been rescheduled to Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center.

Mall marketing managers say the date was moved due to Tropical Storm Darby and consideration for the safety of guests.

The event will consist of cultural and plantation community booths that will include educational elements and an ethnic menu.

Ongoing cultural entertainment includes a festival fashion show featuring traditional and contemporary cultural designs with prizes for the best cultural attire.

A plantation history walk will display historical facts and photos, and for the keiki, an art contest with prizes and interactive plantation games are scheduled.

Plantation photography will be displayed and select pieces on sale, of which a portion of proceeds will benefit the Plantation Festival.

Guests will also have the opportunity to participate to win great prizes with the Plantation Passport, a guide through the many cultural booths. Passports must be stamped by each cultural organization in order to be eligible for Queen Ka’ahumanu Center discount coupons and an opportunity to win a multitude of prizes, including the $800 Hawaiian Airlines gift card grand prize.

Members of the A Hui Hou Fund Steering Committee will also be selling “Honor our Past. Grow our Future” merchandise in support of displaced HC&S plantation workers.
