Kahului Rotary Announces Palaka Award Winner

The Rotary Club of Kahului has selected Dorothy “Honey Bun” Haynes as the recipient of this year’s Michael H. Lyons II Palaka Award.

The award will be presented at the clubs annual Michael H. Lyons II Palaka Celebration & Golf Ball Drop on Friday, Aug. 12, beginning at 4 p.m. at the King Kamehameha Golf Course Clubhouse in Waikapū.

The event is the primary fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Kahului’s Michael H. Lyons II Memorial Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to college-bound Maui youth.

The fundraiser includes the Rotary Club of Kahului Golf Ball Drop, in which 2,000 balls fall from a helicopter. The first four balls in or closest to the hole win a prize. The ball farthest from the hole also wins a prize.

Tickets to the awards celebration are $35 per person and include pūpū and one cocktail ticket.

The Palaka Award recognizes outstanding long-term, substantial volunteer service to Maui County nonprofit organizations. Created in honor of Lyons’ tireless community support, the award is named for the signature palaka shirts he wore.

Haynes, affectionately called “Honey Bun” by most, has dedicated most of her time and support to many nonprofit organizations on Maui that helps to better the Maui community in health, education and arts.

Honey Bun epitomizes the community spirit of Mike Lyons and exemplifies the highest ideals of volunteer service to Maui’s nonprofit community and to the Rotary motto “Service Above Self.”

From the inception of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s fundraising vision in 1985 to her involvement as honorary chair of its elegant Maui Calls event, Honey Bun has been the leading force in garnering support from the community to build a gathering place for the arts.

Honey Bun’s philanthropic outreach doesn’t stop at The MACC. Her love for the community extends to many institutions and organizations: Haleakalā Waldorf School, Maui Food Bank, Kula Hospital Auxiliary, Maui Historical Society, Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center and so much more.

The Rotary Club of Kahului meets on Mondays at Café O’Lei at the Dunes Maui Lani from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. The public is invited. Lunch is $20 or guests can pass on lunch and attend the meeting for a $5 program fee.
