Ask the Mayor: Are Campaign Signs Allowed at Walmart?

Aloha Mr. Arakawa,

Q: I have observed couple campaign signs (same candidate) in an odd location—”private property” at the Kahului Walmart Driveway and parking lot driveway to the Panda Express drive-through.

I have no problem with the candidate, but it seems unfair that he has monopolized the Walmart driveway and parking lot. Is this allowed or acceptable?

Also, are those signs of approved size?

A: I’ve been informed that the sign in question is located on private property and that the candidate received permission from the property owner to post the sign.

As long as the signs are on private property and receive permission to be posted, and meet the size limitation of no more than 18 square feet, then they are allowed in any zoning district.
