Property Tax Office Now Accepting Electronic Payment
By Wendy Osher
For the first time this year, the County’s Real Property Tax Department is allowing electronic tax payments. Maui residents can now make payments online or by phone, using Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover credit cards, debit cards or electronic checks.
The electronic bill payments are only being accepted online and via phone. Credit and debit cards will not be accepted at the Real Property Tax Division office in Kahului.
Administrative Fees: The electronic service includes a convenience fee for credit card users of 2.35% of the total bill amount. There is a convenience fee of $3.95 for debit card payments, and $1.49 for electronic check payments drawn on US Banks. (Non-US banks are not accepted). The fee is disclosed when the payee confirms payment.
Fees apply to each property tax payment processed, and does not allow for multiple parcel payment processing at the same time.
The county of Maui does not receive the fees, rather it goes to the service provider, Link2Gov. The County will not refund convenience fees charged by Link2Gov Corporation.
Minimum Payment: The minimum payment that can be made using this service is $5.00.
Late Payments: All taxes remaining unpaid after the due date will be considered delinquent and are subject to a penalty of 10%. Additional interest at the rate of 1% for each month or fraction thereof will be applied to all delinquent taxes and penalties.
The due dates are:
First Installment (Cycle 1) Due on or before August 20
Second Installment (Cycle 2) Due on or before February 20
Returned Payments: If the payment is returned or disputed for any reason, the taxpayer is responsible for the full amount of the payment (including administrative fees) plus a return fee of up to $25 to the County of Maui.
No Taxes Due: When there are no taxes due for the parcel, you will not be able to make a payment. To verify that there are no taxes due, personnel from the Real Property Tax Division can be reached at (808) 270-7697 Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., excluding county holidays and furloughs days.
Payment Verification: Payment information on the Real Property Tax Division web site is updated weekly, time permitting. The department says users should allow two weeks to verify payments on line. Payment processing can also be verified by calling the Real Property Tax Division.
Documentation Needed to Make an Online or Phone Payment: When using these electronic payment options, it is a good idea to reference the respective tax bill. Tax bills are mailed to property owners July 20th and January 20th each year.
For Online Payments: Go to https://gate.link2gov.com/MauiRPT/. You must have an email address to use the online payment service.
For Phone Payments: Call 1-866-936-1061 and follow the voice instructions.
