Maui Unemployment Rate at 3.6% in July
Maui County’s 3.6% unemployment rate for July was down slightly from the 3.9% reported a month earlier, and up slightly from the 3.5% reported at the same time last year.
The new data was released today by the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.
Unemployment rates in Maui County decreased on Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi from month before levels.
Lānaʻi’s rate of 6.7% was down from the 7.6% rate recorded a month before, and up significantly from the 2.4% rate recorded at the same time last year.
The Island of Maui in Maui County recorded a 3.4% unemployment rate in July 2016, down from the 3.6% rate recorded in June, and up from the 3.3% rate reported in July of last year.
Molokaʻi continued to have the state’s highest unemployment rate of 9.3%–down from the 11.6% rate in June, and the 9.6% rate recorded at the same time last year.
The Department of Labor and Industrial Relations noted that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the state increased slightly to 3.5% in July, after a 3.4% rate reported in June 2016, and a down from the 3.6% rate reported at the same time in 2015.
The department reports industry employment gains in several areas including the following job expansions: 1,400 jobs in Leisure and Hospitality; 300 jobs in Educational and Health Services; 200 jobs in Other Services; 100 jobs in Financial Activities.
Job losses were reported in several sectors including: -900 jobs in Professional and Business Services; -700 jobs in Construction; and -100 in Trade Transportation and Utilities.
According to the new data, there were 660,000 employed and 23,650 unemployed individuals in the state in July, which combines for a total seasonally adjusted labor force of 684,300.
