The county’s Old Wailuku Gym will remain closed for three more months as county crews continue repair work.

The gym has been closed since September 2010, and was supposed to reopen earlier this month; but the discovery of lead paint during the repair process, resulted in delays.

Initial work involved repair to the facility bleachers and inspection of bleacher structural supports to assess potential termite damage.

Work was halted as county employees were brought up to speed on proper training and certification.

Dust within the gym can potentially contain lead paint particles, according to County Communications Deputy Director Ryan Piros.  He said the gym will need to be cleaned and painted before the public will be allowed back.

The estimated completion date is the end of April.
