Search Suspended for Missing Free Diver Near Hāna, Maui

Search and rescue teams on Sunday evening, suspended their efforts in looking for a missing free diver in East Maui.

41-year-old Joshua Goodwin was last seen on Thursday in the area of Mile 41 in Kipahulu.

Police say he was expected to swim out to meet a friend approximately 200 yards offshore, but never arrived.

Personnel with the Maui Fire and Police Departments, as well as assets from the US Coast Guard were utilized during the search, which covered land, air and sea.

“The decision to suspend a search is one of the hardest decisions a commanding officer has to make,” said Capt. Michael Long, commander, Coast Guard Sector Honolulu. “Our deepest sympathy goes out to Josh’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

The Coast Guard search alone covered more than 1,950 square miles and included the deployment of three self-locating marker buoys over four days.

Involved in the search were:
– MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crews from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point
– Crews of USCGC Kittiwake (WPB-87316) and USCGC Galveston Island (WPB 1349) from Honolulu
– Air and surface assets with divers from the Maui Fire Department
– Navy P-3 Orion fixed wing and MH-60 helicopter aircrews from squadrons at Marine Corps Base Hawaiʻi at Kaneʻohe Bay
