Staff, students and community supporters at St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School celebrated the launch and blessing Sunday, Nov. 6, of a new Communications & Media Lab at the Wailuku campus.

“This is a special day and we’re really excited about what this can do for our students,” said Charlene Schulenburg, a 1979 St. Anthony graduate and film producer from Kīhei.

Administrators say the “CAM lab,” project is an important component to supporting St. Anthony’s 21st Century Learning Initiative. The Communication and Media Lab was developed by Schulenburg, and her husband, Gary Passon. “We’re absolutely thrilled about the possibilities this lab brings not only to our students but to the community at large,” Head of School Betsey Gunderson said at the blessing.

Schulenburg served as the lead grant writer, obtaining support from a variety of sources including Oceanic Time Warner Cable, Altherton Foundation, Hawaiʻi Electric Industries Charitable Foundation, Alexander & Baldwin Foundation, Hawaiʻi Association of Independent Schools, the Maui Economic Development Board plus many others.

“We are grateful for all who supported our efforts to maintain affordable tuition rates while offering a rigorous, cutting-edge education to prepare our students to thrive in a high-technology world,” Gunderson said.

Founded more than 165 years ago, St. Anthony is the oldest and only Catholic high school on Maui. This school year marked the first time the campus opened a new Middle School for 6th – through 8th -grade in a refreshed Maryknoll Hall.
