16-Year-Old Pedestrian Dies in Hit-and-Run Accident in Kīhei

UPDATE:  The victim has since been identified as 16 year-old Hannah Simmons of Kīhei.

A 16-year-old girl succumbed to injuries sustained in a hit-and-run crash on Sunday night on the Piʻilani Highway (31) in Kīhei, police said.

The incident was reported at 8:50 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016 on the Piʻilani Highway at the intersection of Uwapo Road.

Police say the collision occurred as a vehicle traveling on Kaiwahine Street and attempting to make a left turn onto the highway, collided into a pedestrian, who was in a marked crosswalk.

According to police reports, the vehicle involved fled the area. The pedestrian, identified at this time only as a 16-year-old female, was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition where she succumbed to her injuries.

A preliminary police investigation reveals that the vehicle involved is possibly a blue-colored Dodge or Chevy full size pick-up truck with an after-market lift and tires.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is on-going.

This was Maui County’s 23rd traffic fatality for 2016 as compared to 21 the same time last year. It was the second fatal hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian since Friday.
