FLOOD ADVISORY EXTENDED FOR MAUI: March 1, 2017

Update 6:45 p.m.
FLOOD ADVISORY EXTENDED TO 9:45 P.M.
At 6:32 p.m. radar indicated moderate to heavy showers moving over Maui from the south, mainly impacting the area from Napili to Lahaina to Kihei, with lighter showers spreading to windward areas.
Rainfall rates between one and two inches per hour can be expected in the heaviest showers. Maui Police reports that portions of South Kihei road have been closed due to ponding of water on the roadway.
Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to – Kihei, Lahaina, Kaanapali, Maalaea, Honokohau, Wailea, Puunene, Kula, Waiehu and Pukalani.

FLOOD ADVISORY FOR MAUI EXTENDED TO 6:45 P.M.
At 3:28 p.m. radar indicated moderate to heavy rainfall over the south-facing slopes of Maui from Kaupo to Maalaea. Another area of rainfall was headed toward Maui from the south and is expected to reach the island within the next hour.
Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Kahului, Kihei, Lahaina, Kaanapali, Waikapu, Maalaea, Honokohau, Wailea, Puunene, Kula, Waiehu and Pukalani.
UPDATE: 1:00 P.M.
FLOOD ADVISORY: MAUI UNTIL 3:45 P.M.
At 1244 PM HST, radar indicated heavy rain moving onshore from Olowalu to Kaanapali. The area of rain will spread to the east and reach the Kihei and Maalaea areas over the next couple of hours.
* Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Kahului, Kihei, Lahaina, Kaanapali, Waikapu, Maalaea, Honokohau, Wailea, Puunene, Kula, Waiehu and Pukalani.
FLOOD ADVISORY: LANAI UNTIL 2:30 P.M.
At 1135 AM HST, radar indicated heavy rain moving over Lanai from the south. A stronger band of heavy rain is also expected to reach the island within the next hour.
This advisory includes the entire island of Lanai.
UPDATE: 1227 PM HST WED MAR 1 2017
..A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1245 PM HST
FOR MOLOKAI IN MAUI COUNTY…
At 1224 PM HST, radar indicated a thunderstorm 5 miles west- southwest of Kaunakakai, moving north at 30 mph. This storm could still produce damaging winds up to 60 mph as it comes ashore.
Locations impacted include… Hoolehua, Kualapuu, Kaunakakai, Kalaupapa National Park, Kawela and Molokai Airport.

STRONG THUNDERSTORMS – LANAI AND KAHOOLAWE
EFFECTS: At 11:30 a.m., radar indicated heavy downpours with gusty winds were located along a line from 10 miles west of Lanai to 20 miles southwest of Makena. Movement was northeast at 35 mph.
Some locations that may be impacted include Lanai City, Honokanaia, and Lanai Airport. Wind gusts up to 50 mph, very heavy rain, and maybe a rumble or two of thunder can be expected as this line comes across those islands between 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until noon.

SPECIAL MARINE WARNING: All Maui County coastal waters.
Effects: 40 to 50 knot winds. Strong thunderstorms. Lightning. Heavy Rain. High Waves. Thunderstorms can produce sudden waterspouts. Seek safe harbor immediately.
STRONG THUNDERSTORMS – MOLOKAʻI
EFFECTS: At 9:24 a.m., radar indicated strong thunderstorms located over the Kaiwi Channel, moving northeast at 40 mph. Through 10:30 a.m., these storms will affect the western half of Molokaʻi with gusty winds and heavy rainfall. Wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph are possible with these storms.
Locations impacted include: Kepuhi, Hoʻolehua, Maunaloa, Kaunakakai and Molokaʻi Airport.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until noon.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms, and may cause localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

Small Craft Advisory: All island waters through 2 a.m. Thursday.
Special Marine Warning: Maui County coastal waters. Strong thunderstorms capable of producing winds 40 knots or greater are possible. Mariners should seek safe harbor to avoid high waves, dangerous lightning and gusty winds.

Looking Ahead
The disturbance bringing us all of this unsettled weather is just west of Kauai and forecast to move over the islands later today and tonight. The trough is expected to lift away from the state on Thursday. However, spots heavy rainfall will be left in its wake because of southwesterly winds and a humid airmass. Thursday night through Friday we are forecast to get into a more stable and “normal” weather pattern but this will be short-lived. A cold front is forecast for this weekend which will bring increasing chances for rain again.
Today
We have south to southwest winds today around 15 to 20 mph with higher gusts. High temperatures are forecast from 78° to 83°. Mostly cloudy skies are expected for Maui County with the possibility for heavy showers and the chance of thunderstorms as well. If we get thunderstorms, damaging winds and hail are possible. It’s a developing weather situation and the potential is there. I’ll keep an eye on it.
