Maui Flood Advisory Extended to 8:45 p.m.

FLOOD ADVISORY – MAUI ISLAND

EVENT: The National Weather Service has ISSUED a FLOOD ADVISORY for MAUI ISLAND in effect until 8:45 p.m.

A Flood Advisory means that nuisance flooding is occurring or imminent. A Flood Advisory may be upgraded to a Flash Flood Warning if flooding worsens and poses a threat to life and property.

This advisory may need to be extended if heavy rain persists.

EFFECTS: At 5:43 p.m., radar indicated that rainfall has temporarily decreased across windward East Maui, though streams remain elevated. Additional heavy showers are expected to redevelop into the evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for the island of Maui until 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, 2017.

At 2:41 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain falling across windward east Maui at rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour. Additional heavy showers expected through this afternoon.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Haʻikū-Paʻuwela, Paʻuwela, Kīpahulu, Huelo, Nāhiku, Hāna, Kailua, Wailua and Haleakalā National Park.

As a precaution, the public is asked to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due
to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Motorists and pedestrians are reminded not to cross fast flowing or rising water in their vehicle or on
foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
