Maui Students Participate in UH Soccer Clinic

An estimated 130 Maui students participated in a UH Rainbow Wahine Soccer Team Clinic and autograph session as part of Lt. Governor Shan Tsutsui’s R.E.A.C.H. Initiative.

The students involved were from six Maui schools including: Maui Waena, ʻĪao Intermediate, Kalama Intermediate, Hāna High & Intermediate, Lokelani Intermediate and Lahaina Intermediate schools.

The students are part of a pilot initiative sponsored by the US Soccer Foundation, Lt. Governor Shan Tsutsui, R.E.A.C.H. Out Hawaiʻi and HMSA.

The US Soccer Foundation’s Soccer for Success after-school program uses soccer as a tool to address children’s health issues and juvenile delinquency, while promoting healthy lifestyles in urban under-served communities. The Foundation partners with community-based organizations across the country to operate Soccer for Success sites – providing thousands of children with free after-school programming three times per week for the entire school year.

The lieutenant governor’s R.E.A.C.H. initiative, or Resources for Enrichment, Athletics, Culture and Health, provides an organizational framework for public middle and intermediate schools to offer expanded learning opportunities during after-school hours.

The initiative’s mission is to ensure all public school students in grades 6 to 8 receive the academic and community-based support they need to stay on track toward high school graduation, college, and career by engaging them in a broad-base of programs and activities, outside of regular instructional hours, in the areas of academic enrichment, arts and culture, and athletics.

Started in March 2013 by Lt. Governor Shan Tsutsui, the R.E.A.C.H. initiative continues to develop with support from the State and generous community partners.
