Attempted Murder Investigation Launched After Attempted Vehicle Theft in Kīhei

Maui police have launched an attempted murder investigation following a report of an attempted vehicle theft at a condominium complex in Kīhei, Maui.

Maui police say a 26-year-old man reported that he observed an unknown male in the Kīhei Holiday Resort complex parking lot attempting to start up a neighbor’s motorcycle.

The incident was reported at around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at 483 South Kīhei Road.

Police say the man confronted the suspect who ran off.  According to police reports, the man gave chase, but eventually lost sight of the suspect.

While standing in the parking lot, the man reports that he saw a blue four-door sedan “drive directly toward him.”  Police say the man “had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck and run over.” The vehicle then reportedly drove off on South Kīhei Road.

Shortly after, Kīhei Patrol officers located the vehicle parked in front of a residence on Humupea Place in Kīhei. Within the passenger seat of the vehicle was the suspect along with another male who was in the driver’s seat.

The suspect was identified as Mel Gene Guillermo, 29, of Kīhei. He was arrested and charged for the offense of Unauthorized Control of a Propelled Motor Vehicle and bail was set at $1,000.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Ernest Carvalho III, 27, of Wailuku. He was arrested for the offense of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and Unauthorized Control of a Propelled Vehicle. His total bail was set at $51,000.
