$438 M Secured for Maui Capital Improvement Projects

Maui representatives secured more than $438 million in Capital Improvement Project funding for the biennium of fiscal years 2018 and 2019 for various projects across Maui County.

Projects for improving airports, highways, and public schools received the most funding—$145.3 million, $119.4 million, and $85.4 million respectively.

Maui lawmakers were also able to secure $3 million in Grants-In-Aid CIP for Maui nonprofit organizations during the state budget negotiations, with the measure being passed by the 2017 State Legislature.

Notable CIP funding for Maui include:

• $126.5 million for improvements at Kahului Airport
• $70 million for extending the Lahaina Bypass Road
• $29.2 million for Hāna Highway improvement, preservation, and rockfall mitigation
• $63 million for building Kīhei High School
• $19.3 million for building a ferry pier at the Lahaina Boat Harbor
• $17.5 million for Pūlehunui site improvement and sewage treatment system infrastructure
• $12.3 million for building a new administration building at Waiheʻe Elementary School
• $9.3 million for Kāʻanapali Beach Restoration and Berm enhancement
• $7.2 million for terminal and utility improvements at Molokaʻi Airport
• $6.3 million for a new housing at the Maui Community Correctional Center
• $6 million for repairs, renovations, expansion, and upgrades to Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital, and Lānaʻi Community Hospital
• $6 million for land acquisition and development of an upcountry Maui agricultural park
• $4.5 million for Kalaupapa Airport improvements
• $4.4 million for Hawaiian Home Lands Lot Development on Maui
• $3.7 million for designing alternative traffic improvements at Pāʻia Bypass
• $3.7 million for removing Hāna Pier Super Structure
• $3.2 million for improvements in the vicinity of Kūihelani Highway
• $3 million for Hawaiian Home Lands Lot Development on Molokai
• $3 million for flood damage reconstruction at Iao Valley State Monument
• $3 million for Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Native Dryland Forest Planting
• $3 million for a new portable trailer office/classroom at Kula Elementary School
• $3 million for baseyard renovation and construction for new restrooms at Lānaʻi Airport
• $2.5 million for two new comfort stations at Mākena State Park
• $2.2 million for the repair and maintenance of existing infrastructure of Hawaiian Home Lands on Maui
• $2 million widening Haleakalā Highway
• $2 million for baseyard renovation at Hāna Airport
• $2 million for water tank improvements at Kapalua Airport
• $1.8 million for renovations and improvements at Maui College
• $1.4 million for construction and renovations at Lānaʻi High and Elementary School
• $1.3 million to build a new girls’ softball batting cage at King Kekaulike High School
• $1 million for construction of various buildings at Maui High School
• $1 million for Central Maui Regional Sports Complex safety improvements
• $1 million for rehabilitation/replacement of Honolua Bridge on Honoapiilani Highway
• $800,000 for heat abatement of Maui Waena Intermediate School
• $700,000 for heat abatement of Kahului Elementary School
• $500,000 for improvements at Pukalani Elementary School
• $500,000 for a new roof at Haʻikū Elementary School
• $400,000 for Kalama Intermediate School music band room expansion
• $300,000 for building a throw away ditch and drainage area improvements at Puʻu Pūlehu Reservoir
• $230,000 for a new roof at Kualapuʻu Elementary School
• $200,000 for covered walkways at Makawao Elementary School
• $150,000 for a large portable bathroom complex at Kahului Harbor
• $100,000 for Maui district baseyard/office improvements

In addition to the executive budget CIP funding, appropriations for Grants-In-Aid CIP were also awarded to organizations for the benefit of the Maui community:

• $1 million for Maui Arts & Cultural Center for completion of a community stage and events lawn area
• $705,000 for Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers Inc. for permanent supportive housing on Maui
• $500,000 for Waiohuli Hawaiian Homesteaders Association Inc. to build a community center
• $400,000 for Maui Youth and Family Services Inc. for a new facility to provide services on Maui
• $300,000 for Laʻa Kea Foundation to build affordable housing on Maui
• $95,000 for Hui Noʻeau for improvements to the Visual Arts Center
