Maui Unemployment Rate at 2.9% in April

Maui County’s 3% unemployment rate for April was up slightly from the 2.9% reported a month earlier, and down slightly from the 3.1% reported at the same time last year.

The Hawaii State Department of Labor & Industrial Relations (DLIR) today announced that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for April was 2.6 percent, compared to 2.6 percent in March. Maui County’s rate was 3.0%, compared to 2.9% the month before.

The new data was released today by the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

Unemployment rates in Maui County increased on Maui and Molokaʻi and decreased on Lānaʻi from month before levels.

Lānaʻi’s rate of 3.2% was down from the 3.7% rate recorded a month before, and down significantly from the 8% rate recorded at the same time last year.

The Island of Maui in Maui County recorded a 2.9% unemployment rate in April 2017, up from the 2.8% rate recorded in March, and unchanged from the 2.9% rate reported in April of last year.

Molokaʻi continued to have the state’s highest unemployment rate of 5.6%–up from the 5.4% rate in March, down from the 5.7% rate recorded at the same time last year.

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations today announced that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the state in April was 2.7%, the same as in March. Statewide, 679,150 were employed and 18,850 unemployed in April for a total seasonally adjusted labor force of 698,000. Nationally, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.4% in April, compared to 4.5% in March.

The department reports industry employment gains in several areas including the following job expansions: 1,100 jobs in Transportation and Utilities; 800 jobs in Construction; 700 jobs in Educational & Health Services; and 400 jobs in Professional & Business Services.

Employment in Leisure & Hospitality remained unchanged and job losses were experienced in Other Services (-100).

According to the new data, there were 679,150 employed and 18,850 unemployed individuals in the state in April, which combines for a total seasonally adjusted labor force of 698,000.
