Maui Gets $1.8 Million in HUD Funding

US Senator Mazie K. Hirono today announced more than $22 million in funding for affordable housing and community development programs in Hawaiʻi through the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Senator Hirono said the federal funding is essential to sustain Hawaiʻi’s momentum in addressing homelessness and increasing affordable housing.

The largest appropriation was for the City and County of Honolulu, which will receive $10.6 million, followed by $6.6 million which will go to the HUD Honolulu Field office.

Maui County’s share of the HUD funding is $1.8 million. According to the annual Point-in-Time count results on Homelessness for 2017, there were 896 homeless individuals in Maui County–that translates to a decrease of 249 individuals (22% drop) from 2016.
