UPDATE: Sewage Spill Enters Ocean Near Kahului Harbor

INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED: Into 68,000 Gallon Maui Wastewater Spill: Maui County is looking into what damaged a 20 inch force main that sent tens of thousands of gallons of untreated sewage into the ocean on Thursday afternoon.

The state Department of Health, Clean Water Branch has issued an update regarding the sewage discharge that was reported in Kahului on Thursday afternoon.

The department states that updated information from Maui County has indicated that the discharge was larger than initial reports, and entered the ocean north of Kahului Harbor.

The public is reminded to remain out of the waters between Kanaloa Avenue to Linekona Street in Kahului until warning signs have been removed.

According to updated volume estimates, approximately 68,000 gallons of the estimated 204,000 gallons that was spilled, entered into the ocean.

The public is advised to stay out of the waters of Kahului Harbor from Kanaloa Avenue to Linekona Street due to a 25,000 gallon sewage spill.

The state Clean Water Branch was notified by the County of Maui of a wastewater discharge near the County’s Kahului-Wailuku Wastewater pump station.

An estimated 25,000 gallons was discharged and was entering into the nearby Kahului Harbor.

The discharge was ongoing at last report. Crews are on-site and repair work is currently underway.

Warning signs are being posted and water samples will be collected.
