When firefighters arrived they found four jugs of what appeared to be used motor oil on the roadway of the far right south-bound lane of Piʻilani Highway. Vehicles had driven over the containers and spread the oil along the right-hand turn lane and onto East Waipuilani Road. The oil slick tracked for about 200 yards down East Waipuilani Road towards South Kīhei Road.

Firefighters cleaned up the oil spill with an absorbent material that resembles cat litter. A street sweeper from the County’s Public Works department arrived at around 8 p.m. Saturday and cleaned up the absorbent from the roadway.
