Kamehameha Maui Welcomes Hōkūle‘a Crew
Crew members from the Hōkūleʻa visited the Kamehameha Schools Maui campus this morning, as the vessel conducts a six-month sail around the Hawaiian Islands. During today’s event, each crew member planted a koa tree at Ulu Koa on the high school campus in Pukalani.
Tonight (Thursday, Aug. 17) at 6:30 p.m., Kamehameha Schools Maui invites the public to come and listen to stories from crew members of their three-year worldwide voyage and how they spread the message Mālama Honua. The Huliau Film & Lecture Series will begin a new series called Ola ʻo Maui Nui starting with a presentation by crew members of the Hawaiian sailing canoes, Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia.
On Thursday morning, our Maui Now team was aboard the Hōkūleʻa. The vessel was offshore of Olowalu in West Maui where the group Mālama Olowalu was scheduled to make an announcement aboard the iconic voyaging canoe. (Check back for the full story.)
The canoes then venture on to Honolua Bay where crew members will come ashore and participate in planting koa trees and native plants at Waokele ‘o Honolua. Canoe tours will also be available. Click here for a complete schedule of events.
