3 Acres Scorched Near Jaws Surfbreak

Maui firefighters responded to reports of heavy smoke coming from the area known as “Jaws” surfbreak lookout on Hahana Road around 8:24 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17.

Pā‘ia fire crews arrived at 8:40 a.m. to find about two acres of brush on fire about three-fourths of a mile down Hahana Road on the makai side of Hana Highway.

The fire was quickly brought under control at 9:48 a.m. and extinguished at 12:32 p.m. The fire scorched a total of three acres.

Officials with the fire department said Air-1 helicopter was called in and provided water drops to help battle the blaze.

A battalion chief, three engine companies and a water tanker from Pā‘ia, Makawao, and Kahului responded to the fire.

There were no injuries reported and no structures were threatened.

The cause of the fire was undetermined.
