Kealia Pond Visitor Center to Reopen

The Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center in Kīhei will reopen to the public at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

The Visitor Center and Refuge offer Maui residents and visitors the opportunity to explore interactive exhibits, hands-on activities for keiki and wildlife viewing areas where some 30 species of birds, including migratory ducks and the endangered Hawaiian stilts and coots,
can be seen in their natural habitat.

To celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week from Oct. 8 to 14, the refuge will offer guided bird walks from Oct. 10 to 13. Participants should meet at the Kealia Pond Visitor Center at 9 a.m.

Kealia Pond NWR is Maui’s largest lowland wetland and features walking trails in addition to the Kealia Coastal Boardwalk, open seven days a week from sunrise until 7 p.m. and located on North Kīhei Road between Kīhei and Mā‘alaea.

Whether experienced birders or simply lovers of nature, visitors will see a variety of waterfowl and shorebirds that live in or migrate through the refuge.

Those who want to walk the trails, should bring binoculars, water and comfortable walking shoes.

Admission is free.

The visitor center will be open Mondays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (closed on federal holidays).

The visitor center is located at Milepost 6 on the Mokulele Highway.
