Arson Suspected in Kahului School Fire

Kahului Elementary School will be closed on Monday, Nov. 27, to assess the damage from Friday night’s fire.

On Friday, November 24, 2017 at approximately 09:30 p.m., emergency crews responded to a two-alarm fire at Kahului Elementary School located at 410 Hina Avenue in Kahului. A building in the middle of the campus was partially on fire, which also damaged the exterior of an adjacent building. A portable classroom closer to the Maui High School parking lot was engulfed in flames.

Seven companies and a Battalion Chief from the Maui Fire Department responded to the fire. The fire was brought under control at about 11:00 p.m. and extinguished at about 12:50 a.m.

Damage to the structure was estimated at $900,000 and damage to the contents was estimated at $300,000.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

Arson is suspected as a cause of the fire. Police have opened an investigation into the matter.

Fire crews on Maui responded to a structure fire at Kahului Elementary School on Friday night, reported shortly before 10 p.m. The fire affected several portable classrooms at the campus.

There were no immediate reports of injuries and the cause of the fire was under investigation at last report.

There’s no immediate estimate for damages.

This is not the first time Kahului Elementary School has been affected by fire. In 2010, a fire at the school’s G building caused an estimated $500,000 in damage and destroyed three third grade classrooms.
