No Tsunami Threat After 4+ Quake at Kīlauea Volcano Summit

There is NO tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi following a preliminary magnitude 4.5 earthquake reported at 10:54 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 in the summit region of the Kīlauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. That according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

A statement was issued for information only, and no action is required.

The US Geological Survey reports that the earthquake was centered within the following preliminary parameters:

• 3.7 mi SW of Volcano, Hawaiʻi;
• 23.6 mi WSW of Hawaiian Paradise Park, Hawaiʻi;
• 25.2 mi SSW of Hilo, Hawaiʻi;
• 49.5 mi ESE of Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi; and 
• 212.1 mi SE of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi.

The Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense Agency issued a statement saying, “As in all earthquakes, be aware of the possibility of after shocks. If the earthquake was strongly felt in your area, precautionary checks should be made for any damages; especially to utility connections of gas, water and electricity.”
