Active Brush Fire in Upper Kanaio, 15 Acres Burned

Crews have made significant progress in controlling this fire. While the fire has not been officially declared “contained”, crews have been able to stop its progress and are working on cooling hot spots and securing the perimeter. At this time there are still no threats to area homes, and the cause of the fire has not been determined. There are also no injuries to report.
UPDATE: (12:37 p.m. Aug. 1, 2018)
Crews from the Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety are currently on scene of a brush fire in the upper Kanaio area.
The fire is approximately 15 acres in size and moving in thick brush with strong winds being reported.
Maui Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said access to this fire is currently an issue.
Engine 13 (Kula), Engine 2 (Pāʻia), Hazmat 10 (Kahului), and Tanker 10 (Kahului) are on scene along with Air 1 and Air 2 making water drops. State of Hawaiʻi Forestry personnel are also assembling a crew to assist in the firefighting effort.
FSC Yatsushiro said there are homes located downwind of the fire, but they are not considered threatened at this time.

Police and Fire personnel are responding to a brush fire in the Upper Kanaio area. The public is advised to be aware of the potential smoke and fire hazards.
