Arrest Made: Kula Highway Accident Involving Police Vehicle

A Maui police officer was released from the hospital after being treated for injuries sustained in a multi-vehicle crash on the Kula Highway Wednesday afternoon.

Maui police have launched an attempted murder investigation into the accident, which occurred at around 1:30 p.m. on the Kula Highway near the Lower Kula Road intersection.

According to police reports, the officers from the Wailuku Patrol Division were responding to the area of the Kula Fire Station at around 1 p.m., to a call involving a domestic abuse in progress.

While responding to the case with emergency lights and sirens on, information was received stating the male offender of the domestic abuse had fled the Kula area in a blue truck in an unknown direction.

As the officers continued their emergency response southbound on Kula Highway in the area of Lower Kula road (also known as “Skid Row”), the male offender later identified as Garette Moriwake, 35, of Kula, approached the officers in a blue Toyota pick-up truck from the opposite direction.

Police say the Toyota pick-up truck then veered across the center line and collided into the first Police vehicle, an SUV, before climbing an embankment and colliding into tractor trailer truck which had pulled to the western shoulder of Kula Highway.

Officer Max Kincaid, the operator of the Police SUV, was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the collision before being released.

Moriwake was placed under arrest and transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment of injuries he sustained in the collision.

The circumstances of this incident remain under investigation.

Motorists in the Kula area are advised to use alternate routes in the area of Kula Highway at Lower Kula Road due to an on-going investigation into a motor vehicle accident involving a police SUV, a semi-truck and another vehicle.

The accident was reported at around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2018.

At 2:40 p.m., police issued an advisory saying motorists traveling into Kula are encouraged to use other routes such as Kula Highway/Kekaulike (377), Omaopio Road or Pūlehu Road. The investigation is expected to be a protracted event, according to police.

Initial reports indicate that the accident involved a blue truck, a semi-flatbed truck and a police SUV. A police patrol car was also observed on scene.

According to one witness account, the blue truck was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crashed into the SUV Police vehicle and went into the side of the hill, hitting the semi before coming to a rest.
