No Tsunami Threat to Hawaiʻi After Large Fiji Earthquake

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi after an 8.2 (preliminary magnitude 7.9) earthquake reported in the Fiji Region at around 2:20 p.m. HST on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The PTWC says that based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.
The USGS reports that the quake occurred at a depth of 559.6 km and was located: 167.1 mi E of Levuka, Fiji; 203.1 mi SE of Labasa, Fiji; 224.5 mi E of Suva, Fiji; 278.8 mi E of Ba, Fiji; and 280.4 mi NW of Nuku‘alofa, Tonga.
