Red Cross Responds to Wailuku/Paukūkalo Home Fire

Maui fire crews responded to a structure fire on Pohala Street in Paukūkalo/Wailuku on Sunday morning.

The report was made at around 11:03 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018.

Upon arrival on scene, fire crews found a working fire with heavy smoke and flames coming from a bedroom window.

Engine 1 and Rescue 10 were able to quickly deploy hoselines and knock down the fire to keep it confined to a single bedroom, according to department reports.

All occupants of the home (two adults and four children) were able to safely exit the structure safely prior to emergency personnel arriving. There were no injuries to report.

Damage estimates are not available at this time as the situation is still being investigated.

Engine 1 (Wailuku), Recue 10 (Kahului), Engine 10 (Kahului), and Battalion Chief 3 responded.

Disaster volunteers with the American Red Cross planned to meet with affected residents and ensure their immediate emergency needs for food, shelter and clothing are met.

According to the organization, caseworkers will continue to follow up with anyone affected in the coming weeks to provide referrals, guidance or additional assistance as needed to help with the recovery process.

The Red Cross encourages all families to make a disaster plan to include an evacuation plan with two different routes of escape, a communications plan to help families reconnect after disaster and a disaster supplies kit that is readily available to aid in a quick evacuation.  Information on developing a family plan is available to the public at redcross.org/hawaii, or a brochure can be requested by calling 734-2101.
