Here on Maui, a large sinkhole was formed on Puʻu Way near Ulumalu Road in Haʻikū when a drain pipe failed either by collapse or inundation of debris from upstream. The 4-6 foot corrugated metal pipes were washed downstream along with portions of the road.
The Department of Public Works, Engineering Division is developing a scope of work to repair and will likely up-size the pipes. Plans are expected to include the construction of large new concrete head walls.
