Thyne Named New Maui Fire Chief

The County of Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety Commission has selected David Thyne as the new Maui Fire Chief. Thyne has been with the department for more than 30 years.

“We notified the candidates of our decision at 5 p.m. yesterday. It was important for us to make the selection as quickly as possible because we wanted to ensure continuity of leadership at the Department,” said Commission Chairman Charles Hirata.

According to Hirata, the selection was made by a majority vote with two of the Commission’s members unable to attend.

“The selection committee put a lot of work into the process and came up with excellent interview questions,” said Chair Hirata.

Thyne joined the department in 1987, was promoted to Captain in 2002, Battalion Chief in 2008, and earned a promotion to Assistant Chief of Support Services in 2009.

Thyne previously served in the Lahaina district and Training Bureau. He served as Captain of the Kīhei Fire Station and was later transferred to the Pāʻia Fire Station in 2005.

He holds both associate and bachelor degrees in Fire Science.

Other finalists considered for the post included Capt. Kaulana Kino, Chief Lionel Montalvo and Capt. Guy Danley.
