Maui Island Unemployment Drops to 1.9% in August

The unemployment rate on Maui Island was at 1.9% in August, down from the 2.1% rate in July and down from the 2.1% rate reported at the same time last year.
Molokaʻi’s rate was 5.8% in August, down from the 6.1% rate the month before, and down the 6.7% rate reported at the same time in 2017. The island of Lānaʻi reported a 2.1% unemployment rate in August 2018, up from 1.0% rate in July, and down from the 2.8% rate reported in August of 2017.
The County of Maui as a whole had a 2.1% unemployment rate (non seasonally adjusted) for August 2018, down from the 2.2% rate in July 2018, and down from the 2.2% rate at the same time last year.
The statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for June was 2.1%, unchanged from July and down from the 2.2% rate reported in August of 2017. The new data was compiled by the Hawaiʻi State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.
In a separate measure of employment, the DLIR reports that there was a gain of 700 jobs in the Leisure & Hospitality sector, as an increase of 100 jobs in Trade, Transportation, & Utilities, and 100 additional jobs in Financial Activities. Government jobs rose by 2,200 jobs, primarily due to the hiring of primary election workers. Job losses were reported in Education & Health Services (-300); Professional & Business Services (-300); and Construction (-100).
