in the Green Room at the Maui Arts& Cultural Center.

Inspired by 19th-century landscape painting, science fiction film and firsthand field study, Rockman’s paintings presents a vision of the natural world that is equal parts fantasy and empirical fact.

He has exhibited extensively worldwide since 1985, having been featured in a number of solo museum exhibitions and is represented in many important public and private collections.

From 2009 to 2012, Rockman collaborated with director Ang Lee on the prize-winning film Life of Pi, serving as “inspirational artist” by preparing conceptual drawings to serve as visual reference.

For more than two decades, this artist and amateur naturalist has collected organic materials during extended travels to places including Tasmania, Madagascar and Antarctica. In these explorations, Rockman mixed local soil samples with water and a matte acrylic medium to depict delicate field drawings of the things that live in each environment.

A courtyard reception will be followed by desserts, beverages, and pop-up book store and book signing with the artist.

Tickets will be $25; $10 for students with valid ID.
