Registration Open for Inaugural Maui Homestead Summit

Marc Aquino will co-lead a “La‘au Lapa‘au Teas” presentation with Ku‘ulei DeRego at the Nov. 3 Maui Homestead Summit. “La‘au lapa‘au” is Hawaiian for medicine, and Aquino and De Rego advocate the healing benefit of infusions made from backyard plants, such as hibiscus and soursop. Registration is open through Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018, for the Nov. 3 inaugural Maui Homestead Summit.

The summit will offer vibrant speakers and presentations, and free music, hula and food, including homestead Chef Pikake Newhouse’s sellout cuisine.

Open free to the public, the daylong event starts 9 a.m. at He Piko No Waiohuli community center.

The lineup features Waikapu kalo farmer Bobby Pahia keynoting lunch on the topic of all things taro.

Ke‘anae native Marc Aquino and Waiohuli homesteader Ku‘ulei Anakalea DeRego follow at 2 p.m. discussing “La‘au Lapa‘au (healing) Teas at Makahiki.”

Then, WOW! tomato co-proprietors Mike and Kainoa Hodson speak at 3 p.m. on cultivating economic self-sufficiency at a Waimea homestead on Hawai‘i Island.

The summit culminates with a 6 p.m. with an ‘aha ‘aina, or feast, showcasing Hālau Kamaluokaleihulu under the direction of Kumu Hula Kahulu Maluo, accompanied by the Ahumanu musical group.

Pa`upena Community Development Corp. and the Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations (SCHHA) co-sponsor the Maui Homestead Summit. Pa‘upena CDC’s mission is to provide resources and training to empower Hawaiian Homes trust beneficiaries to build homes and self-sufficient communities. SCHHA is the oldest and largest coalition of homestead associations unified to protect and advocate for the interests of beneficiaries of the 1921 Hawaiian Homes Commission Act federal trust.

The venue is located at the bottom of Lau‘ie Drive, makai of Mile Marker 15 on Kula Highway.
