Kaumakaiwa at Wailuku First Friday
Wailuku Town and First Hawaiian Bank welcomes five-time Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner, Kaumakaiwa Kanaka‘ole along with Shawn Pimental on the main stage at First Friday, tonight, Nov. 2, 2018.
With her roots in the hula of the esteemed Kanaka‘ole family of Hawai‘i Island, Kaumakaiwa has been on the stage all her life. As the great-grandchild of Edith Kanaka‘ole (a leader in the Hawaiian renaissance), Kaumakaiwa’s deep understanding of Hawaiian culture has led her to become a highly-esteemed singer, chanter and dancer.
In addition to the five Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards she has received, Kaumakaiwa was also the first Hawaiian performer to appear at the indigenous cultural festival, The Dreaming, in Australia and the first Hawaiian performer to appear at globalFest in New York.
Nevah Too Late will be opening the night with live music on the Maui Thing stage from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Kaumakaiwa will be accompanied by award-winning musician, singer and producer, Shawn Pimental, playing on stage from 8 to 9 p.m.
