The number of registered medical marijuana patients in Hawai‘i jumped 33% in 2017, according to state Department of Health statistics.  August of 2017 is when the first medical cannabis dispensaries opened their doors in Hawai‘i, and by January of 2018, total registered patients exceeded 20,000.

Meanwhile, recent gun ownership estimates show there are five guns for every thousand people in Hawai‘i, or around 7,859 registered weapons.

Although Hawai‘i has allowed medical use of marijuana since 2000, it also requires registration of all firearms.  Since marijuana remains a Schedule 1 drug under federal law, that disqualifies medical marijuana patients from owning firearms and ammunition.  Get more answers and thoughts in our Talking Law video above with attorney David Sereno.
