Three Wind/Kite Surfers Rescued at Kanahā, Maui

Rescue crews helped two windsurfers and one kitesurfer to shore in three separate incidents at Kanahā Beach in Central Maui on Thursday afternoon.

The first incident was reported at 3:30 p.m. when Ocean Safety personnel aboard a Jet Ski responded to a windsurfer in trouble.  Ten minutes later at 3:40 p.m., Ocean Safety crews responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a kitesurfer in trouble.  And at 4 p.m., a second windsurfer was brought to shore after their equipment broke down.

Maui Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said all were assisted to shore by personnel aboard the department’s Jet Ski 10.  No medical attention was needed.

The incidents occurred while there was a high surf warning in effect for the north shores of Maui. That warning has since been replaced by a high surf advisory which is expected to bring surf of 12-18 feet to north and west facing shores of Maui and Molokaʻi.
