Women’s March Maui Encourages ‘Aloha for All,’ Jan. 19

The Women’s March Maui 2019 takes place on Saturday, Jan. 19, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., beginning and ending on the front lawn of the University of Hawaiʻi-Maui College campus in Kahului.

Organizers say this is an inclusive, free event and everyone is welcome. Robin Pilus, member of this year’s organizing committee said, “The intention of the Women’s March Maui 2019 is from the heart and simple. We gather as a community to affirm our unity and steadfast belief in kindness, acceptance, and aloha for all. We stand against acts of oppression, and are dedicated to building inclusive systems that support economic, political, social, racial and environmental justice.”

Lei’ohu Ryder, Hawaiian spiritual leader, visionary, healer, singer/songwriter, and educator, will begin the event with a message and pule that will “embrace, unify, bless, and honor all life,” according to Pilus.

After a short march along Kaʻahumanu Avenue, music will be provided by some of Maui musicians Deborah Vial Band, Marty Dread, and Nara Boone. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable items for donation to the Maui Food Bank, especially canned goods, rice and cereal.

The march is sponsored by the UH-Maui College Chancellor’s Office.
