Most of the police presence at the Queen Kaʻahumanu Center has since left the area following a report of a robbery against an individual at the location earlier this afternoon (Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019). Security guards could not provide comment, but say some police remained on property for the investigation.

Following the incident, several police vehicles had responded to the rear (West End) of the center near the parking structure. At least one officer was observed carrying a rifle and boarding passing buses to do checks at around 1:15 p.m. At one point, police had blocked access to vehicle entering the parking structure while checks were underway.

During the incident, some tenants of the center opted to temporarily lock down their businesses, however that was done at their discretion.

Maui police are responding to a report of a robbery at the Queen Kaʻahumanu Center in Kahului on Maui. Maui Police Lt. Gregg Okamoto tells Maui Now that police are actively looking for a suspect at this time. There is heavy police presence in the area.

Police were seen boarding buses to do checks, but as of 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019, the search was active and ongoing.  At last report, police were checking the parking structure and restricting traffic going in or out.

Bystanders tell Maui Now that they were approached by police to see if they saw an individual matching the suspect’s description and were reportedly told that the suspect was known to be armed. We have not confirmed that information with police. Another bystander said police asked if they had seen someone with a ponytail that fled the area.

Further details were unavailable at last report. Police could not elaborate on the robbery itself.  That information is forthcoming.
