New Cultural Arts Course at UH Maui College
The University of Hawaiʻi Maui College is offering a new Cultural Arts course through its continuing education program with master artist Kenneth Hiraoka.
Students will learn how to make a fish hook with raw materials and learn how to create a pohaku kuʻi ʻai (stone kalo pounder) with natural materials.
Hiraoka has over twenty years of experience with a long history of local art demonstrations including participation in the Celebration of the Arts Festival at Kapalua.
“This course will pass on the traditions of cultural arts, and support the perpetuation of traditional knowledge and creative skills on Maui,” said Hiraoka. “It is a powerful experience to create a piece of art with your own hands,” he said.
Classes are scheduled on Sundays, Jan. 20 to March 10, 2019 from 1 to 6 p.m. at the UH Maui College campus in Kahului.
